£8m Medway Innovation Centre gets underway

12 September 2008
Kent has taken the next step in a multi-million pound project backed by South East companies that is designed to create hundreds of jobs in the county.

A symbolic topping-out ceremony for the new £8 million Medway Innovation Centre aimed at turning the region in to a hi-tech area has been marked by the tightening of a screw on Wednesday, according to Kent Online.

Some 2,000 hi-tech jobs specialising in national security technology are expected to be created at the centre by 2016, thanks to backing from sponsors including BAE Systems, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the universities of Kent among others.

"This project is about the economy and well-being of Medway. For me this is the fulfilment of many years’ work and it’s an acknowledgement of people who have been so supportive," said Jane Chitty from Medway Council.

Offices, meeting rooms and a 75-seat conference suite are expected to grace the new centre, which will be "a place where entrepreneurs can come and mingle", according to Philomena Lavery, the centre's managing director.

Businesses planning to move into Medway can benefit from its Partners for Growth funding, which normally covers set up costs.ADNFCR-1584-ID-18777486-ADNFCR
