Aer Lingus to invest £100m in Gatwick operation

6 January 2009
The South East will benefit from improved transport links to the continent thanks to Irish airline Aer Lingus, which plans to invest in a base worth £100 million at Gatwick in West Sussex.

New daily routes to Munich, Zurich, Nice and Vienna will be introduced as part of the move, which will see the operator base up to eight aircraft at the facility.

Announcing the move, Aer Lingus Chief Executive Dermot Mannion expressed his excitement with the development saying the opportunity would enable the firm to expand its operations in Europe's biggest aviation market.

"The Gatwick operation will complement our existing services out of London Heathrow, and position Aer Lingus for growth as we roll out new routes and bases in future years," he said.

"We are offering consumers flights to top European business and leisure destinations at convenient times and competitive fares as part of a superior offering that sets us apart from our rivals."

Gatwick is the second-largest and second busiest airport in the UK after Heathrow and is the world's 25th in terms of annual passenger volume, according to the Airports Council International.ADNFCR-1584-ID-18958580-ADNFCR
