400 jobs as £250m investment heads to Surrey

11 February 2009
Surrey looks set to add its contribution to the luxury car market following the news that the McLaren Group is to invest up to £250 million in the production of the vehicles.

Some 100 sports cars are currently being produced annually at McLaren's automotive division in the South East but this figure is to be boosted to 1,000 by 2011, according to the Financial Times.

The newspaper reports that this figure will eventually be increased to 4,000 units annually as the company turns to volume production in order to produce more affordable cars.

Most of McLaren's models cost in excess of £300,000 but the group's Chairman and Chief Executive Ron Dennis is optimistic that the plan, which will also result in the creation of 400 jobs, will be successful.

"It is a very prudent and realistic target, taking into consideration the fact that we will be out of recession come 2011," Mr Dennis, who is behind Lewis Hamilton's Formula One success, told the newspaper.

The facility's technology centre is used by the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team to prepare its vehicles for competition.ADNFCR-1584-ID-19021404-ADNFCR
