AFC Energy completes fuel cell test

14 October 2009
A Surrey-based green energy company has successfully completed trials of its innovative electrodes for fuel cells.

AFC Energy has concluded the field test of its low-cost, non-platinum electrodes at a plant in Germany, which discovered that the electrical charge produced by the device is at the same level as current platinum-based options.

The company has now applied for patents relating to the design of the product and believes that this trial is an important stride towards the commercialisation of a viable fuel cell system for power generation.

Ian Balchin, Managing Director of AFC Energy, explained that the company's 50 kilowatt system could become the building block of multi-megawatt fuel cells around the world.

He said: "This successful testing of our fuel cell system using proprietary, lower cost electrodes demonstrates that the AFC Energy has taken the next step in the development of a truly low cost, alkali fuel cell system."

AFC Energy's technology can convert hydrogen into electricity with virtually zero emissions other than water.ADNFCR-1584-ID-19409362-ADNFCR
