Sector Overview
 
BMW Plant OxfordThe automotive sector adds £9.5 billion to the UK economy and accounts for approximately 9.5% of all exports. (Source: ONS data, 2005)

The South East has strengths in Motorsport, Component Manufacture, High Tech Design and Engineering, Telematics and Aftermarket. 

Around 18,000 people are employed in this sector in the South East. The South East expertise in the automotive is complemented by other high tech engineering companies including aerospace and marine.

The region is home to 500 automotive companies which include four of the 10 Formula One teams - Williams, McLaren, Renault and Red Bull Racing.

BMW has invested £100 million in the Mini factory based in Oxford. This will lift production to 250,000 units per year by 2007. The company is also investing heavily in a new Rolls-Royce model to be produced at its factory in Goodwood, West Sussex(Source: news.bbc.co.uk)

Automotive companies in the region include: Ford, Ricardo, Hella, Aston Martin-Lagonda, Prodrive, Grupo Antolin, Xtrac, Wurht UK, Garmin, Ostram and DPS Composites.

The region is home to three key Automotive clusters - North Oxfordshire, part of Motorsport Valley; around Oxford and in Surrey and Berkshire.

Automotive Research

The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, based in Thatcham, Berkshire carries out research to reduce motor insurance claims, and increase safety and quality standards.

The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) Crowthorne, has world-leading crash-testing facilities to meet a full range of current legislative requirements.

Universities, Higher Education and Training

A range of automotive engineering undergraduate and post graduate courses are offered by many of the regions educational establishments including: The universities of Oxford and Southampton, Oxford Brookes University and the National College for Motorsport.

Business Networks

The Faraday Partnership in Automotive and Aerospace Materials is based at Oxford University’s new Begbroke Business and Science Park. The initiative will increase technology transfer between academia and industry. Many companies in the South East region support the partnership.

 
Motorsport 100
 
Motorsport 100 is a new survey that tracks the fortunes of the UK motorsport industry every quarter. It is commissioned by Motorsport Development UK, and conducted by independent researchers Experian Business Strategies, amongst a balanced sample of one hundred organisations from across the industry.
Motorsport 100 speaks to business leaders throughout motorsport to provide up to date insight on this high performing and fast moving industry. Over time this will produce the Motorsport 100 Index that will act as a barometer of industry optimism and will be used as an indicator of the overall state of the industry.
